Ham and Pasta Bake

Ingredients

  • 400 g penne
  • 200 g cooked ham, diced
  • 200 g frozen peas
  • 1 piece onion
  • 40 g butter
  • 40 g plain flour
  • 600 ml milk
  • 150 g grated Emmental cheese
  • 1 pinch nutmeg
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 pinch black pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 200 °C. Cook the penne in plenty of salted water for 2 minutes less than the packet suggests, then drain.
  2. Finely dice the onion. Melt the butter in a saucepan, sweat the onion until translucent, stir in the flour and cook briefly. Gradually whisk in the milk and let the sauce simmer for about 5 minutes until silky. Season with salt, pepper and nutmeg.
  3. Stir two thirds of the cheese into the hot sauce. Combine the penne, diced ham and peas with the sauce in a baking dish.
  4. Scatter the remaining cheese over the top and bake for about 20 minutes until golden and bubbling.
