⏱ 25 min · 🍽️ 4 Servings · 🧂 8 Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 1 piece small honeydew melon (about 800 g)
  • 500 g watermelon (flesh only, deseeded)
  • 2 piece limes
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1.5 l dry white wine (chilled)
  • 0.75 l dry sparkling wine (chilled)
  • 1 bunch mint
  • 200 g ice cubes

Instructions

  1. Halve the honeydew melon, scrape out the seeds with a spoon and scoop the flesh into balls with a melon baller or cut it into cubes.
  2. Scoop the watermelon into balls in the same way, removing the dark seeds as you go.
  3. Put the melon balls in a punch bowl with the juice of the limes and the sugar and mix them carefully.
  4. Pour in about 200 ml of the white wine and leave the melon to infuse in the fridge, covered.
  5. Pour in the remaining white wine and keep the punch cold until serving.
  6. Just before serving, add the ice cubes and pour in the ice-cold sparkling wine slowly down the side of the bowl.
  7. Wash the mint, shake it dry and scatter the leaves over the punch. Ladle it into glasses so that a few melon balls go into each one.

Melonenbowle (melon punch)

A German summer classic that has belonged to garden parties all over the country since the nineteen-seventies: pale honeydew melon balls and red watermelon float in dry white wine with lime and mint. The sparkling wine goes in only just before serving and makes the punch lively, and by the end the infused melon balls taste like little wine-soaked fruits. The recipe makes a good two and a half litres.
